Just months before the midterm election, Trump purged a bipartisan agency that helps states run secure elections. The Election Assistance Commission was created by Congress to support state election officials across the country by certifying voting systems and maintaining the national mail-in voter registration form. After the commission resisted Trump's request to change the voter registration form to require proof of citizenship, he fired the two Democratic commissioners and requested the Republican member resign. Trump has said that he wants his administration to "take over" nationwide voting and it certainly looks like he's trying to. We can't let him. Tell Congress to investigate Trump's purge of the Election Assistance Commission. Gutting the Election Assistance Commission is just one more attack in the Trump administration's broader campaign to make voting harder — including attempts to limit mail-in voting and pass the SAVE America Act, which voting rights advocates warn could prevent millions of eligible Americans from registering to vote. Many experts are concerned Trump could try to replace the bipartisan commissioners on the Election Assistance Commission with lackeys who would rubber stamp his plans to suppress the vote by requiring proof of citizenship. Add your name to the petition and tell Congress to investigate Trump's purge of the Election Assistance Commission, restore its bipartisan leadership, protect the agency's independence, and block any effort to weaponize federal election administration ahead of the midterms. The petition to Congress reads: "Investigate Donald Trump’s purge of the Election Assistance Commission, restore bipartisan leadership, protect the agency’s independence, and block any effort to weaponize federal election administration or restrict voter registration ahead of the midterms."
